Reading up on JPEG XL

Chrome 155 adds JPEG XL decoding, delivering 30‑50% better compression than JPEG, HDR support and lossless transcoding via a memory‑safe Rust decoder.

JPEG XL underperforms AVIF in lossy compression and decode speed, making it unnecessary for the Web despite advantages for non-web use cases like professional photography.

Google's Chromium team reversed its decision to drop JPEG XL support, now planning to implement it in Blink, which could make it a de facto standard for images.
